LEGO SERIOUS PLAY

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”

(Plato)

No methods are neutral or you might say - innocent. Methods can be violated by political and veiled agendas. A misuse of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® tend not to happen. This is partly because play in its nature, requires voluntary commitment, unconditional surroundings and seriousness. Regardless, in our view conducting LEGO Serious Play processes requires good moral and ethics.

Therefore, our way of using LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is based on on-going ethical reflections, thinking in global values and sustainability, democratic principles such as ensuring everyone has a voice, are being heard and seen, providing time to explore and reflect, showing respect for the individual, fulfilling obligations to the community and diversity. And at the end of the day, we simply wish to fertilize for a better future. A future beyond demolishing short-term and shortsighted agendas.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is a tool and technique which responds to the participants various personal character and skills. It provides all participants with a voice. This as the basic condition to a safe atmosphere and fruitful communication and to improve a dynamic group-process. It utilizes the visual, auditory and kinesthetic skills and inspires participants to be curios and wondering on the level of a playing field. And a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® process has its focus kept on the subject, hereby also excluding personal agendas.

During the facilitated meeting-process you will be building models and landscapes with LEGO® bricks, giving them meaning through story-making, and playing out various possible scenarios – a process which deepens understanding, sharpens insight, and socially "bonds" together the group as it "plays" together.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is a facilitated meeting, communication and problem-solving process in which participants are led through a series of questions, probing deeper and deeper into an issue. Each participant builds his or her own 3D LEGO® model in response to the facilitator's questions using specially selected LEGO® bricks. These 3D models serve as a basis for group dialogues, knowledge sharing, ethical reflections, problem solving and decision-making. LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is a radical, innovative, experiential process designed to enhance and pursue chosen purposes, goals, practices and expectations. It is based on the belief that everyone can contribute to dialogues, reflections and decision-making (supporting the participants in -not what to think but how to think-).

In this context dealing with complex and multifaceted ethical issues the use of LEGO® bricks simply enables the participants to take a shortcut to the core. The bricks work as a catalyst – and when used for building metaphors, they trigger processes that you assumed were previously unaware of.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® serves as a universal language regardless of culture, religion, sex, age or status. By using the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® materials and methodology the participants will explore the relationships and connections between people and their world, observe the dynamics both internal and external, explore various hypothetical scenarios, and gain reflective awareness of an issue, its conditions, context and content.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® will guide you into a free and honest exchange of opinions. The physical and tangible construction allows the participants to have conversations which flow without the fear of treading on personal feelings. They will experience that the real issues are addressed, and ultimately they will be able to see things through the eyes of their team and have them view the picture through theirs.

Successful LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitation of groups is about relations, searching for resonance and goes beyond your educational skills and performance. It is about your character and capability in showing empathy and compassion, also depending on how the participants perceive you.

It`s about being able to facilite by ensuring a safe and easy playing approach on hard issues, which needs sufficient time to reflect on. Also recognizing that ethical issues is a life-long process.

Our LEGO Serious Play meetings/processes are grunded in the ideal of democratic edification.

We conduct short open inspirational presentations/introductions to clarify the theme, to be put into interactive humble enquiries, facilitating and providing time to think before you speak, moving beyond indidvidual storytelling in also listening to others, ask questions and submitting for reflexivity.

As certified LEGO Serious Play facilitators our basic view and approach is obvious and articulated in and around the processes - therefore no self-promotion, personal agendas, blaming, threats, scolding, commands, teachings and moralizing, warnings, martyr statements, comparisons, sarcasm or prophecies.
